The Madhya Pradesh government has imposed traffic fines and penalties against different types of traffic rules violations in the state. The step has been taken to ensure better implementation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 in MP. As per the rules, if you are found violating the traffic rules, you are supposed to pay the fine depending on the kind of violation. Some of the common traffic rules violations are driving a vehicle without a driving licence or registration certificate, not wearing a seatbelt or helmet, overspeeding a vehicle, breaking parking rules, drunk driving, unauthorized use of vehicles, etc. It is worth mentioning that if you are caught breaking the same traffic rules more than once, then the penalties shall be increased. Here are the penalties for some common traffic rule violations in Madhya Pradesh:

| Drunk driving | 6 months or Rs. 2,000 |
| Mentally or physically unfit person driving a vehicle | Rs 200 |
| Driving an uninsured vehicle | Rs 300 or 3 months imprisonment |
In case a challan has been issued against a vehicle owner, he/she is supposed to pay the fine as soon as possible. The challan payment can be done either online or offline. Visit the Madhya Pradesh (MP) RTO offices or traffic police station for submitting the challan offline or make an MP e challan payment online from the state’s traffic police website.
Usually, an SMS will be sent to the registered mobile number informing the vehicle owner about the challan or the challan is sent to the person by post. If by any chance, you have misplaced the e-challan sent to you or deleted the challan SMS, you can check your pending challans online. To check the status online, visit the Parivahan Website and press the ‘Check Challan Status’ tab on the homepage. A new page will open where you are required to submit either your DL number or vehicle number. If there’s a pending challan, you would be able to see complete details about it. However, if there’s no pending challan, a Challan Not Found’ dialogue box shall appear. Alternatively, you can also check the pending challan status from the official website of MP traffic police.
In some odd cases, a wrong challan can get issued against a vehicle owner. In this case, you need to inform the concerned authority about it. There’s a specific contact number for every district of Madhya Pradesh for traffic-related queries or complaints. You can contact these numbers and inform them about the wrong challan. These contact numbers are listed on the official website of MP traffic police for the convenience of the citizens.
