Transition in life is stressful, isn’t it? Whether it’s starting a job, entering a new relationship, or moving. It’s bound to be somewhat of a rollercoaster of emotions.
Starting college is no exception to this feeling. For many, it will be the first time on their own. How can you make this transition more seamless and streamlined?
Our guide has got you covered to get you started on the right foot!
- Checklist
Before your first day of school, it’s imperative to make a checklist of items to bring. You want to then cross-check your list with your college. The rules aren’t universal across all Universities.
Some may be more lenient while others are more conservative. Things like a microwave/mini-fridge, power strips, and halogen lights may be prohibited in the dorms. To ensure you are starting college off on the right foot, it’s best to follow the specific rule and requirements.
- Roommates
Did you fill out a roommate questionnaire for your first semester? Going to college is quite the experience, and roommates are no exception. Due to the random nature, you may find yourself with a less desired roommate.
Don’t let this bother you too much as it is just a part of the experience. It can make things like class, socializing, and clubs a bit uncomfortable at times. You don’t have to be best friends with your roommate, just as long as you can live civilly.
If you find the situation too unbearable, you are always free to communicate with your Residential Advisors and Residential Directions to see what your housing options are.
Throughout the semester you are bound to make friends along the way who will make for a more ideal roommate in the upcoming semesters. You may even consider off-campus housing or apartments.
- Food
It’s important to get the lay of the land of the college campus, including food. To fuel up, it’s good to see what dining options are available at your disposal.
These days schools will accommodate all dietary choices and restrictions such as vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free. It helps to ask your fellow students or check the college’s site too.
You are always free to venture off-campus as well to find cheap yummy meals. Many will be a part of the college meal plan too!
- IT Help Desk
Some of the friendliest people you’ll come across when starting college is the IT help desk. The IT help desk staff will help you with all computer help including connecting to the WiFi, setting up a router, printer, or troubleshooting Zoom.
They are a great resource when you are in a band. Some IT support may even be able to lend you a loan laptop if it’s an emergency.
- Good Grades and Fun
When going to college, good grades and fun don’t have to be mutually exclusive. As a common fear amongst incoming freshmen, you can achieve both if that is what you want.
Learning proper time management is the thing you’ll want to learn to get the most out of your college experience. Practice something like timeboxing for your studies and also going out to the clubs. Just make sure you get enough sleep to maintain your health as well.
