Few Things to Know before Getting into Music School

There are a lot of misconceptions about music school surrounding difficulty, culture, and utility. If you have decided to enroll yourself in a music school, here are a few things that you should know.

  • The school doesn’t matter. Teacher does.

Many people think that it is the reputation of the school which matters, however, the truth is that a school or an institution would not make you better. It’s all about the teacher. You can find a good instructor that can push you to become better in your skills. It is always better to put more focus on the reputation of the teacher than the school.

  • You can learn a lot about it on your own.

Most of the music curriculum can be learned on your own, especially the music theory. If you are motivated, you can easily teach yourself music theory and skills by using the Internet. However, learning on your own is not a substitute for formal education, but it will give you the foundation.

  • You won’t get magically better

The music school curriculum is quite rigorous. You must put in some extra time in practice to get better at your craft. If you are highly motivated, you should do whatever it takes, you can block off daily hours on your schedule, reserve practice rooms, or sign a certain number of days for uninterrupted practice. Getting better in music is not done by magic; it is all about the time you put in. You should not just rely on your college. It is completely up to you to decide how much you want to get better and succeed.

  • It is as difficult as you make it

Music schools are not difficult in general; the difficulty of music school varies depending on who you ask. If you are highly motivated and have a high musical aptitude, then music school will be easy for you. To get the most out of your music school, you should work exceptionally hard. You should use your free time in practice. It is recommended, before attending, to plan out your yearly and monthly goals. You should also revisit your goals from time to time.

  • You need to find your own way

If you are a new student, you should hold your personal limits, beliefs and ideologies, and not be influenced by your peers. You will have to maintain a strong moral compass and sense of being before enrolling yourself in a music school. Always do which will benefit your education the most, even when no one else is doing it. In nutshell, you will have to charter your own path to success. It goes without saying; you should stay away from any kind of addictive distraction.

  • Being well rounded is important

You should take as many opportunities as possible without burning yourself out. However, you should also learn to say no. Try learning as many instruments as you can. You can also try conducting or recording. Focus on your language skills and try becoming fluent in at least one other language. Pick up as many feathers in your cap as possible; you never know which skill will come in handy. For instance, singers who only sing, find it hard to work with singers that can play multiple instruments.
